🌊 Celebrating World Oceans Day 2024 🌊
World Oceans Day, observed every year on June 8 since 2002, highlights the critical role oceans play in our lives. Covering over 71% of the Earth’s surface and holding 97% of its water, oceans are essential for providing food, oxygen, and jobs, as well as maintaining our global climate.
This year, the Marine Science Association of Myanmar (MSAM) celebrated World Oceans Day in Kyun Chaw Village, Magyi District, Shwe Sainyan Township, Ayeyarwady Region. This area is part of a Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) project, proudly managed by the local community.
Event Highlights:
✨ Community Engagement:
We were thrilled to welcome 117 representatives from Kyun Chaw Village and neighboring project villages, including 72 women and 45 men, who joined us in this special celebration.
📚 Knowledge Sharing:
Representatives from the project villages and MSAM staff shared valuable insights about marine conservation and the importance of our LMMA. Their presentations helped enhance our understanding and appreciation of the oceans’ vital role in sustainability.
🐬 Honoring Conservation Heroes:
We honored the dedicated project staff from Shwe Thaung Yan Ward No. 3, who recently rescued and released a stranded dolphin back into the sea. Their commitment to protecting marine life is truly inspiring.
🗑️ Promoting Cleanliness:
MSAM donated a trash can to Kyun Chaung Village Elementary School, encouraging better waste management practices. Participants also joined hands in a beach clean-up activity, ensuring our beautiful coastline remains pristine.
The celebration not only marked World Oceans Day but also reaffirmed our community’s dedication to preserving our local marine environment. Let’s continue to work together to protect our oceans for future generations!
