Welcome to Fish Conservation Area (FCA_ Ayeyarwady River Basin)

Fish Conservation Area (FCA) – Ayeyarwady River Basin support by Darwin Initiative through by Fauna and Flora International Myanmar Programme

The Fish Conservation Area (FCA) in the Ayeyarwady River Basin is a community-led initiative aimed at safeguarding freshwater biodiversity, supporting sustainable fisheries, and preserving the ecological integrity of Myanmar’s largest river system. Established through collaboration between local communities, conservation partners, and government stakeholders, the FCA designates critical habitats where fishing and other extractive activities are restricted or regulated to allow fish populations to recover and thrive. The Ayeyarwady River Basin is home to numerous endemic and migratory fish species that are vital for local livelihoods and food security. However, pressures from overfishing, habitat degradation, and climate change have led to declining fish stocks and ecological imbalance. The FCA serves as a nature-based solution to restore fish populations and support the long-term sustainability of inland fisheries.

Protect key fish species, especially those that are threatened, endemic, or of high ecological and economic value.
Allow fish populations to replenish, benefiting surrounding fishing communities through improved catch rates over time.
Safeguard spawning grounds, migratory pathways, and nursery areas essential for fish lifecycle sustainability.
Promote community stewardship through participatory planning, monitoring, and enforcement of FCA rules.
Strengthen ecosystem resilience against environmental threats, including water pollution, illegal fishing practices, and climate impacts.
