LMMA _Magyi
Welcome to Locally Managed Marine Area (Magyi) Project
Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) Magyi areas support by Fauna and Flora International Myanmar Programme
A Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) is a designated coastal or marine area that is managed by local communities, often in collaboration with government authorities and conservation partners. The goal is to protect marine biodiversity, sustain fisheries, and preserve traditional livelihoods by applying local knowledge and community-driven management practices. In Myanmar and across the region, LMMAs are gaining momentum as an effective and inclusive approach to marine conservation. Through locally established rules—such as seasonal closures, gear restrictions, or no-take zones—communities take the lead in protecting vital marine ecosystems such as coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves. LMMAs are grounded in traditional stewardship and modern science, offering a powerful model for sustainable marine resource use and long-term ecological resilience.
